How to choose the right motorcycle lift

leave a comment »

There are a lot of motorcycle lifts to choose from. Most motorcycle lifts
would work just fine, but as rolling art you don’t want to display or work on
a motorcycle lift that is under sized or over sized.

Motorcycle Lifts: Size the Motorcycle Lift to the Bike.

Start with measuring the center to center on the wheels. If it is 80 inches
or less most all motorcycle lifts will work. Some will require a 13 inch
front extension. You also need to know the width for one good reason, and
that is getting off the motorcycle when on the lift. Though the manufacturers
do not recommend you ride the bike on the lift most people do. Getting off a
motorcycle is hard enough let alone being 7” more off the ground. Remember
you still have to hold the bike up until you get the wheel clamp tightened
and the tie downs on. If you are just using the motorcycle lift to clean the
bike and normal maintenance, the 8 inch side extensions would work well. For
larger project or bikes, the 12 inch side extensions are best. If you are
taken the motor out and back in then think about getting a motorcycle engine
stand like the Handy 16008. Holding a motor with your arms 12 inches out is
not easy. The side extensions are easy to take off when you have the
motorcycle lift in the air.

Motorcycle Lifts: Motorcycle Lift Weight Limits

The weight limit is important as well. If you have a trike that is over a
thousand pounds you have now narrowed your choices to just one or two models.
Most of you standard motorcycles are under or close to 900 pounds. All of the
Handy motorcycle lifts have a thousand pound capacity or more. You can find
the gross weight of your bike on the neck tag or call your dealer.

Motorcycle Lifts: Imported or Made in the USA?

Some imported equipment is great stuff and your bike may have come from the
same country, but because the manufacturer process changes over seas a lot
the product does too. This makes getting parts hard sometimes. Labor is not
always the way they save either. They can scrimp on internal parts. If you
buy American you can pay a lot more, but get a better product and better
service in the long run. All of the Handy Motorcycle Lifts are made in the
USA (Marshalltown, IA)
